SAVE THE CURLEW IN MID WALES

The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust  (www.gwct.org.uk) say that our species of curlew, the Eurasian curlew, is facing potential extinction and we must do all we can to prevent its continued decline, and possible loss, from the UK:

“The curlew used to be a common species in Britain, breeding in marshes, meadows and arable fields as well as on moorland. However, the curlew population has declined rapidly in recent decades. There are now only half the number of breeding curlew in the UK compared to 25 years ago. The curlew was added to the UK red list in in December 2015, and it is argued to be the most pressing bird conservation priority in the UK. The famously evocative and previously familiar call of the curlew is becoming increasingly rare.”

To raise awareness about the reduction in numbers of the curlew in recent decades due to loss of privacy and habitat, wind turbines, land improvement, quad bikes and dog walking, I have produced a Call of the Curlew Mosaic and have pledged £25 towards their cause if the mosaic sells.

You may wish to see it in person at the exhibition. If so, think about making a day of it by visiting MWAC and all the delights that they have to offer this summer, including a summer exhibition with artists Catrin Williams and her theme of Belonging. The theme of Resilience is expressed by textile artist, Vicky Ellis, artist, Natalie Chapman and Dylan Glyn, contemporary furniture made in beautiful wood.

There is also a sculpture trail and a great cafe with delicious light lunches, homemade cakes, teas and coffees.

You may also like to consider one of their workshops. This Saturday 29 June there is a silver smithing workshop in which you will make a pair of silver earrings, £90. I am running a mosaic workshop on Saturday 20 July, 10am-4pm £55 and there is a printing workshop - basic lino cutting £65 on the same day. If you’re interested in finding out about the workshops or if you wish to book, please contact MWAC office: office@midwalesarts.org.uk, 01686 688369.

Classes are also available in life drawing, pottery for adults and children and once a month there is a Talking Art event. Next month their guest speaker is Catrin Williams on Wednesday 3 July 2-4pm and it is a free event. Just show up.
